Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

An increasing number of people are pledging to decrease their flying time. This is quite beneficial to the environment; however, this can negatively affect individuals and businesses alike. In my opinion, the environmental advantages of reduced flying time easily outweigh any potential drawbacks it carries to travelers and businesses.

Flying less brings various environmental benefits. Firstly, flying is among the most polluting form of travelling. Due to overdependence on air travel in the modern world for traveling, problems related to the climate and environment have been exacerbated. Reducing air travel lowers travelers’ carbon footprint, helping mitigate climate change. Secondly, it also pressures government and related corporations to invest in cleaner energy alternatives. For instance, this movement in Finland has led the state to replace traditional planes with electric ones. The government has also incentivized the airlines to adopt sustainable aviation fuel.

On the other hand, less air travel negatively affects both individuals and businesses. Because other travel alternatives are relatively more time-consuming, individuals may miss educational and employment opportunities. They may not be able to attend overseas universities or work for international companies. Corporations will also suffer in terms of the market size, as they will unable to expand their business internationally without fast air travel. However, these compromises are necessary due to the rapid pace and irreversible repercussions of climate change and other environmental issues. Therefore, the advantages of reduction in flying time outweigh any problems it causes for people and businesses.

To conclude, while less air travel may hurt individuals and companies, it brings many environmental advantages, outweighing these drawbacks.
