✅ True/False/Not Given Questions
True/False/Not Given questions in the IELTS Reading are essentially developed to evaluate your ability to understand and interpret information from a passage. These questions test whether you can detect a certain statement as ✅ correct, ❌ incorrect, or ❓ if there is no information in the passage to determine its validity.
📘 Key Definitions:
Their elaborated versions are given below:
✅ True: The information in the statement agrees with the information in the passage.
❌ False: The information in the statement contradicts the information in the passage.
❓ Not Given: The passage does not provide enough information to determine whether the statement is true or false.
🧠 How to Approach True/False/Not Given Questions:
1️⃣ Read the Statement Carefully:
Of course, reading the statements is the most essential approach while solving the questions. You have to understand the meaning of the statement completely before looking for it in the text.
Also, keep a lookout for keywords or phrases that will guide you as you comprehend the passage.
2️⃣ Look for Corresponding Information in the Passage:
Then, you will need to find that specific part of the passage that corresponds with the statement. It might be in the same order as the questions, but not always.
Also, it is significant to pay attention to details such as dates, names, and facts, because questions about them can be asked.
3️⃣ Identify the Type of Information:
Once you have found the relevant part of the text, determine whether the statement matches the passage in meaning or not.
✅ True: If the statement exactly matches the information in the passage.
❌ False: If the statement directly denies the information that is in the passage.
❓ Not Given: If the information required to confirm or deny the statement is missing.
4️⃣ Be Careful with Paraphrasing:
The important thing to be cautious about is that the passage might paraphrase or use different words or expressions than the statement.
Therefore, you need to understand the meaning behind those words, and not just look for the exact phrase, as it might become difficult to find and you run out of time. ⏳
No one wants that to happen!
🧪 Example:
Passage:
"Many imperiled species of animals have been saved from extinction through efforts such as breeding programs and habitat conservation. However, it is clear that climate change still poses a substantial threat to their existence."
Statement:
🌍 Climate change is the biggest threat to endangered species.
➡️ Answer: ❌ False – The passage says that climate change poses a significant threat, but it does not say it is the biggest threat.
🧠 (An active mind can solve the question easily, so make sure you understand the statements carefully.)
🐾 Breeding programs and habitat conservation have helped prevent animal extinction.
➡️ Answer: ✅ True – The passage says that these efforts have saved many endangered species.
🐦 The passage discusses the extinction of birds specifically.
➡️ Answer: ❓ Not Given – The passage talks about endangered species in general, but does not mention birds specifically.
(Thus, the information given in the statement does not seem to be available in the passage.)
Therefore, True/False/Not Given questions are easy to answer if you pay close attention to the passage as well as the questions.
