Access to clean water is a basic human right. Therefore every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Clean water is becoming inaccessible in many countries. Thus, it is argued that it should be provided without any charge, as it is considered a basic human necessity. While I agree that access to drinkable water should be guaranteed as a right for the poor, the rich should be taxed heavily on it.
Water is definitely one of people’s most fundamental needs. Throughout the world, the working class has been seen to struggle with this basic need. Tap water is usually full of pesticides and microbes that have been proven to be dangerous for consumers’ health. The ever-increasing price of bottled water also exacerbates the problem, making only dirty water available to the poor. This dirty water leads to many health complications, including even kidney failure, further straining the worldwide healthcare system. Therefore, it makes absolute sense for states to ensure the availability of water free of any germs and viruses to keep their populace healthy and capable of work.
Considering access to water as a basic need, and the poor being unable to afford such a need, the rich should be taxed heavily for the development and maintenance of this service. The government needs some funds to run these operations, and it cannot be completely cost-free, as it requires labor and energy. The tax money collected from the rich can be effectively used for these services, without putting further financial burden on those already struggling. It also must be noted that a healthy workforce also benefits the privileged class, cutting their cost of health insurance provision. Thus, the rich should be taxed heavily to ensure the availability of clean water to all.
To conclude, given that clean water being accessible on the public level is a basic human need, the upper class should be taxed to make it available for the whole population.
